When it comes to readying students for the jobs of the future, too often America’s K-12 education system does not sufficiently prepare Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students. Research has shown that this negatively affects these students’ life outcomes, specifically in terms of their long-term career aspirations, prospects and economic security.

While holistic preparation currently includes improving academic, technical, and 21st-century skills, it should also include cultural competence and social and emotional learning skills. It also means that academic content is accurate, cultivates curiosity, and encourages critical thinking. Social and emotional learning efforts teach students to manage their emotions, create meaningful relationships, and make responsible decisions.
